Short teaser for my graduation project I finished this summer

This is my first composited shot. It is meant to demonstrate my basic ideas of the way I want to use background elements in combination with the animated shots. I used After Effects to build the 2 1/2 D environment and added some camera movement, Animation and color grading.

the following video is meant to represent my progress on the project.
it shows the first animated shots in a quick edited version. there are no background elements/interactions yet and timing and cameramovement aren´t finished. still i hope this gives a clear impression of the beginning of the short film.

two different animation styles:

the first video is basic 2d animation and my first idea was to create the character of the child entirely in this technique...

due to the difference between this style and the apperance of the "roggenmuhme"- character
the child will now also be treated with the combination of 2D and 3D techniques:

For my graduation film project, i´m planning to create a 2D animation short film.

The story is based on a traditional, yet not too well known character called "Roggenmuhme" (lady of the rye). My basic idea is to tell a spooky story about a child, facing this scary character.
For a first impression, i added a few artwork sketches.

right now, i´m collecting/recording sounds and pieces of dialog as well as collecting more ideas for shots. i`m thinking about which ideas are necessary in order to transport the story and which might just be a waste of precious time.

okay...so after thinking about the ideas i had so far for this period i came up with another concept.
the main concept is based on the idea of experiencing or seeing your whole life again in the very moment of your death. so basically we rush through moments of somebody`s life...from birth to death. i thought of giving it a pacifist-statement through showing the short life-span of a young man who gets shot during a war. i´m not so sure about the graphic look, but i thought about some sort of first person view of the bullet that kills the character...i think for this idea the sound plays a very important role. i would like to create a strong, personal atmosphere in order to create a connection to the main character/victim. the idea is to make it seem very intimate in order to give the idea that you are actually watching the memories of the person. so basically the idea is some kind of statement against the dehumanization of people in a war.
i tried to quickly illustrate the idea of the animation. this is just meant to be a short test/storyboard idea...

misunderstood

Here is another idea for a series of short Animations. I thought about the issue of misunderstanding. This Animation-test is based on the idea of people misunderstanding each other.Right now,the idea is to illustrate some kind of history of humanity...from the stoneage to the future- always resulting in humans fighting...
For this test i recorded some of the sounds...and it even has some kind of primitive dialog ...

2nd idea

So here is an idea for a story-based Animation. It´s some kind of Samurai-story about revenge and sharp blades. For the graphic style, i wanted to use a calligraphic style. For the sound, i would use dialog, preferred in Japanese. I added some storyboard/ artwork pictures and a first Animation test. But I guess that this project has to wait a little bit...because as you can see, again my starting point is based more on the graphic look ( even though I think that the sound/dialog would be very important for the sphere of this project...)

Okay, so here is a first Animation test. Regarding the double-meaning of the clip´s title it may seem a little bit vulgar, but it is actually based on our first recording-studio session, where we recorded a similar tea-bag sound. The basic idea would be a series of similar words with such a double meaning, referring to adult movies, but i guess thats not everybody´s cup of tea....and while there is no dialog involved i think this clip has to be seen as a short test of recording sounds at home and animating a short scene...

Sound Project

Our current project is based on sound design. For this period sound and/or dialog is the starting point for our work. We are free to experiment with the different possibilities of sound recording, sound design, dialog, lip-sync animation and so on. That´s why the result of this period doesn`t necessarily has to be a finished short movie but can also be a series of short Animation tests.
Right now, I´m still collecting ideas for short Animation sequences. I don´t know yet whether i gonna concentrate on making a finished product (short Animation) or on experimenting with different ideas ( Animation tests). During the next days I will collect some ideas here on the blog.

From a list of ten words we had to decide

for one term, which we would use for this

assignment. We had to create a collection

of 12 pictures with reference to the

chosen word. The only restriction for our

work was to make squarish pictures and

to use silkscreen printing at least once.

The word i decided for was "muur"(=wall).

For the presentation i made some kind

of picture story about people building walls.

I tried to think about basic qualities of walls

throughout the human history. Besides the

protective aspect, i thought about the basic

human instinct of getting as much territory

as possible.

So the story deals with humans living together

in peace as long as someone starts to define

his own territory. At first they all build a wall

together but it doesn`t take long until they

aren`t satified with their area anymore...

3D, 3e Periode

This time, we had to think about

a future city/world and create it

with drawings, models and sculptures.

My idea was some kind of divided

society, where the privileged people

live in a big city, while there are

slums outside the citywall. I tried to

think about a dark future, where nature

is nearly destroyed and plants are kept

in small private gardens for luxury.

I started with a drawing, showing the divided

worlds. The people from outside the city are

kept out by military force but ironically they

can still see the bohemian way of life

of the "upper-class"-city citizens. One of the

private indoor gardens is directly pointing

towards the slums- showing them

the world they can`t afford.

I tried to make some models

out of this drawing, stressing the

wall and the different

city parts...

I also made a model with a tiny garden

under the roof, made of real plants...

Still there is a lack of precision in these

models. Unfortunately they neither

look like minature worlds,nor

like abstract sculptures

but still they shall work as some kind

of sketches in order to give this

future world a 3 d aspect...and

at least they work as a cool place

to park my matchbox-cars...

This time, our starting point for our
work was to collect six different dialogues
we listened to, f.e. in the train, on
the street or while listening
to people talking on mobiles and so on.
Further on, we made small storyboards
out of these little dialogue bits...
For the presentation we had to decide for
one story and use it as the basis for
a movie or picture series or picture book.

For the presentation, i made
a small animation, inspired by
my experiences, while trying to understand
dutch people on the street and catching
up pieces of dialogue (mijn Nederlands is stets
nog niet zo best. het spijt me!)
so basically the flick deals with a person
coming to a different city or country and
finds himself struggling in this new
unknown environment.
i tried to use more abstractness and
visuality instead of pure storytelling.
that`s why i hope it leaves room for
interpretations and identification.

most of the work was done in premiere-
i used photoshop layers and made them move
in premiere. the more sketch-like
animation parts were made with tv-paint
animation. i used parts from holiday videos
and overpainted them frame by frame in TVP.

For this period, our goal was
to create a 2 minute movie.
The starting point was trash.
We examined and photographed
trashcans in order to find a good
inspiration for our movie- for
example an intersting piece
of garbage. Ideas like the background,
history or the reason for these objects
to become a part of the throw-away
society, were possible starting points
to create a short movie.

My idea for the story basically came when
i found several pieces of art in the containers
in front of our school. There were whole presentations
with photographs and drawings in the garbage. So
much creativity and effort just to be thrown away...

So basically my movie is just about another
piece of art (a super-hero drawing in this case...)
which is thrown away. But seemingly, the creation-
process of the drawing went a bit to far and so
the drawing awakes and comes to life in the trashcan.

3D, 2e Periode, 1st opdracht

Our first task for this period was to
create a hanging object.
For this assignment we should
make a sculpture hanging from one
wall to another without touching
the ground. Material, size, or content
were just a matter of our choice.

I decided for this bridge-like object
with little clay figures. On the bent,
wooden board the figures show certain
points in an ordinary human life. From
baby-age till the death as an old man
a human life is shown between two walls.

The topic of this period was "een plekje om te vertoeven" (?).
Basically we had to think about a place we felt comfortable to stay or hang out at.
For example our home or garden or whatever came into our minds. It was also
possible to decide for a fictious place from a book or movie.
During the weeks we had to illustrate this place in different ways (sketches, drawings, 3D objects, later we wrote texts about it- descriptions, poems, short stories...).
My place was some kind of Japanes house with garden. I wanted to create some kind of meditative-asian surrounding.
In the second half of the period we had to think about a totally different place but
still with equal qualities.
As i had written a short story about the Japanese house involving a wounded warrior running away from a battlefield, trying to reach the peaceful place, i thought about a comparable situation in our world. This resulted in a short movie about a peaceful bathroom atmosphere beeing the place to forget the situations of a stressful day. During this movie the flashbacks of a stressful day are drowned in a fantasy world of bubbles and waterdrops...

For 3D we had to decide for one object
(made of not more than 2 materials and
not to big/small) and make different
"werkproefjes" regarding size, color,
material... . I decided for a pepsi-can.
After making models in several
different ways, we had to decide for
one proefje, we would use in our
presentation.

Here you can see on what i`m
working at the moment. As i decided
for a proefje made of pape, my idea was
to make some kind of pape stilllife.
i want to make it look a little bit dirty
and filthy with pape-ashtray, pape-
pizza-piece-plate(what a word!), pape-
cigarettes and of course my pape-pepsi-
cans.

I decided for this material because i like
the look of it and it´s easy to work with.
There is also a connection between the
situation or scene of my stilllife and

the trash-material it is made of.
